Elearning Course Series Overview

Inclusion & Belonging in School-Age Programs

Set ONE | Special Needs | 1 Hour

This Knowledge Nugget will identify what exclusion, segregation, integration, and inclusion looks like in out-of-school-time programs. Person-First and Identify-First language will be explained so that you will be confident during conversations with families, youth, and staff. We’ll identify the benefits of inclusion for all children and youth in your program, not just those with disabilities or learning differences. Finally, we will explore barriers to inclusion and belonging that may be present in your program.

Disability & Neurodiversity Overview

Set ONE | Special Needs | 1 Hour

You have heard the terms “disability” and “neurodivergent” but may wonder what exactly they mean. We will define several terms including disability, intersectionality, neurodiversity, and neurodivergent. Then we will explore two common neurodivergences, ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder, highlighting common strengths and differences. Finally, we will identify neurodiversity-affirming language and practices.

Secret Sauce Ingredients for Afterschool Programs

Set ONE | CKC Learning Environments and Curriculum | 1 Hour

Program participants enter your program each day with a few priorities that they seek to have met. And sometimes these change daily for a participant! This Knowledge Nugget will share essential program components to provide at the beginning of each program day, and opportunities to kick your current practices up a notch. Topics include snack, social connection, movement, rest and relaxation, and bodily functions.

Families as Allies

Set ONE | CKC Families and Community Systems | 1 Hour

We all agree that positive relationships with parents/guardians in out-of-school-time are crucial to the culture and success of an out-of-school-time program. But how do you establish them? How do you shift back to friendliness if the relationship has soured? This Knowledge Nugget provides information on what information you need and don’t need about a participant, specific questions and how to ask them respectfully, and guidance on building relationships and repairing them when needed
