Afterschool Access & Equity Survey

Oregon AfterSchool for Kids (OregonASK) is collecting data around issues of access & equity in afterschool programs. The goal of this data collection project is to identify barriers to accessing afterschool programs as well as equitable practices within the field. Our hope is to identify where gaps in service may exist to be able to effectively advocate for more funding and resources to support quality expanded learning opportunities for all youth in Oregon. Download the Access and Equity Survey Overview to see more about how we will be reaching out.

To collect this data we will be distributing 3 different surveys to 3 different audiences. These surveys are critical to understanding the landscape. They will identify in what areas programs are under-resourced and where there is a lack of access to quality afterschool programs for children in Oregon.

We need your help! If you are a program manager, coordinator, or director please take THIS Management Survey.  Take a look at our FAQ below or let us know if you have questions about the survey or your participation.

Participating programs will receive access to results from survey data, as well as chances to win great raffle prizes for your program, including free professional development training, free museum passes, and more! Click Here to see a full list.

Our Three Survey Tools:

  • Management survey: If you are a program manager, coordinator, or director of an afterschool program for school aged children that takes place during the school year, you should take this survey. General areas of data collection include: Program enrollment, program demographics, program cost, funding, and general program information.
  • Site Staff survey: If you are an onsite afterschool instructor or leader who works directly with youth, you should take this survey. General areas of data collection include: history of working in afterschool, approaches to the job, challenges you may face on the job, and what kind of training is available to you. If you would like your onsite staff to take this survey please contact us at survey@oregonask.org or 503-689-1656.
  • Youth survey (5TH-9TH GRADE): this survey is for youth who currently participate in afterschool programming. Questions on the survey are centered around how youth feel about their participation in afterschool programs and what kind of impact participating in afterschool has on them. If you are interested in having youth in your program complete this survey please contact us at survey@oregonask.org or 503-689-1656.

The data from these surveys will be compiled into a report and used to communicate with elected officials about the need for quality expanded learning opportunities, particularly in communities that have traditionally been underserved.

Afterschool Access & Equity Surveys FAQs

What are these surveys?
These surveys aim to identify barriers to participation, as well as issues around equity in afterschool programs. We hope to identify geographical areas with little to no access to afterschool programs, as well as find out what kind of supports existing programs need to deliver quality programming. The data will be used to compile a report and advocate for more resources for afterschool programs in Oregon. For more information on the surveys and what they will be used for, please see our informational sheet.

Who should take these surveys?
There are 3 different surveys tailored to 3 different audiences:

  • Management survey: If you are a program manager, coordinator, or director of an afterschool program for school aged children that takes place during the school year, you should take this survey. General areas of data collection include: Program enrollment, program demographics, program cost, funding, and general program information.
  • Site Staff survey: If you are an onsite afterschool instructor or leader who works directly with youth, you should take this survey. General areas of data collection include: history of working in afterschool, approaches to the job, challenges you may face on the job, and what kind of training is available to you. If you are interested in having your onsite staff to take this survey please contact us at survey@oregonask.org or 503-689-1656. <
  • Youth survey (5TH-9TH GRADE): this survey is for youth who currently participate in afterschool programming. Questions on the survey are centered around how youth feel about their participation in afterschool programs and what kind of impact programs have on them. If you are interested in having youth in your program complete the survey please contact us at survey@oregonask.org or 503-689-1656.

Do I need anything to complete the survey?
For the management survey, it is recommended you have enrollment, budget, and scheduling data for your programs at hand in order to move through the survey faster. If you don’t keep this sort of data, then estimates should work just fine. You shouldn’t need any additional information for the site staff or youth surveys.

What are afterschool programs? How do I know if my program should take the survey?
Afterschool programs refer to programs and activities for 5-18 year-olds that take place when they are not in school, including before/after school, evenings, weekends, summer, and holidays. For the purpose of these surveys we are only collecting data for programs that occur during the school year. Please see directly below for specifics on what programs should take the survey.

Programs that SHOULD take the survey
If your program takes place before school, afterschool, in the evenings, on the weekends, or on holidays during the school year, you should take the survey. If your program does not operate everyday, takes place somewhere besides a school or is run by volunteers – you SHOULD take the survey.

If you are a program manager/coordinator/director you should take the management survey. If you work onsite as an afterschool instructor/leader who works directly with youth you should take the site staff survey. If you are interested in taking the site staff survey and/or having youth in your program take the youth survey, please contact us at survey@oregonask.org or 503-689-1656.

Programs that should NOT take the survey
If you run a program for school aged students that takes place during their normal in-school time or during the summer, you do not need to take this survey. We acknowledge the great work you do for our students, but this survey is targeted specifically at afterschool programs that take place during the school year.

How long will it take?

  • Management survey: Should take about 20 minutes to complete. In order to complete it quickly, please have enrollment, budget, and scheduling data on hand.
  • Site Staff survey: Should take about 10 minutes to complete.
  • Youth Survey: Should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

We know that is a lot of time and that many of you are busy, so your time taking the survey is much appreciated. We are trying to capture a complete and comprehensive picture of afterschool programs in the state of Oregon.

Why should I take this survey?
Our hope is to highlight the need to support existing afterschool programs in Oregon, as well as highlight areas of the state where there are no afterschool programs for children to participate in. Our final report will help tell the story of your program and the youth we are striving to serve most effectively. We will work with lawmakers and decision makers in hopes of building a more sustainable system of funding for afterschool programs. By taking this survey you and your program will also have access to several incentives, including a free registration to the Oregon Afterschool Conference, free museum passes, and much more!

What if I manage a program that has multiple sites? Do I need to fill out a survey for each site?
You do not need to fill out a survey for each site! However if you manage multiple sites, we would appreciate it if you could forward the site staff survey to your onsite staff who work directly with youth. Additionally, if your program has multiple sites, please answer questions with all of your sites in mind (ex. For the question that asks how many students your program serves, please include all your sites in your answer)

What if I don’t know the exact numbers the survey asks for?
That’s fine. Most of the time, the survey asks for general estimates rather than exact numbers. For example, if the survey asks for how many students your program serves annually and you don’t have exact numbers, please just make your best estimate.

If you are interested in taking the site staff and/or youth surveys for your program, please contact us at survey@oregonask.org or 503-689-1656.

Will my name or my program’s name be used in the final report?
No identifiable information will be tied to you or your program in the final report. We are only asking for your name and your programs name for our internal tracking purposes. We may use quotes from free response answers in our final report but no individual or program names will be tied to them.

What if I don’t have time to take these surveys now?
We will be collecting data April through June 2018 and again in the Fall of 2018. If we don’t hear back from you or see your survey responses, we will follow up with you to make sure you have the correct link, if you have questions and understand the purpose of the survey. Our goal is to get as many programs as possible to respond!
